Rep. Lewis Pledges to Protect Early Care and Education For North Carolina’s Children

Lillington, NC—

On Tuesday, December 14th, staff from the Harnett County Partnership for Children, a Smart Start agency, met with Representative David Lewis to discuss the importance of early childhood education and to ask for continued support of young children in Harnett County.

“The Harnett County Partnership for Children (HCPC) is committed to ensuring that all local children have access to the early care and education, family support and health services they need to help them succeed in school and in life,” said Lisa Familo, HCPC Executive Director.  “However, while the challenges facing local families continue to grow, the funding that allows Smart Start to serve families is in jeopardy and additional cuts are on the horizon. Today’s meeting was to help Representative Lewis better understand the needs in our community and to see that Smart Start is a key piece to our community. Today’s children are North Carolina’s future leaders, parents and workers. Our state’s prosperity depends on their healthy development and growth.”

Representative Lewis pledged his commitment to protect early care and education for North Carolina’s children by signing a Children’s Pledge provided by HCPC. By signing this pledge, Rep. Lewis acknowledged that North Carolina’s prosperity depends on our ability to ensure that all children have the opportunity to develop intellectually, socially and emotionally. Furthermore, Representative Lewis agreed that ensuring access to high quality early childhood care and education programs needs to be a top priority for the state.

Awarded South River EMC Operation Round Up Grant

Lillington, NC –The Harnett County Partnership for Children (HCPC), a non-profit organization that utilizes Smart Start funds as well as private donations to provide programs and services that impact children during the earliest years of life, birth to age five, is a recipient of the Operation Round Up Grant, a community enrichment initiative of South River Electric Membership Corporation.

Funds for this grant are provided by South River EMC members who allow the electric cooperative to “round-up” their monthly bill to the next highest dollar amount. The extra change that is collected goes into a Community Assistance Corporation fund. Quarterly, funds are distributed to local service agencies in need, or to educational pursuits at local organizations.  HCPC was awarded $5,000 to implement a child passenger safety seat distribution and education program in Harnett County.

HCPC will use the funds received through the grant to promote and provide car seat safety checks by a certified child passenger safety technician, distribute information related to proper car seat installation, and to purchase age- and size- appropriate car seats and booster seats for families in need. “This grant will help the Harnett County Partnership for Children achieve its mission of providing community-based health, education and family support programs,” said Lisa Familo, Executive Director for HCPC. “A child passenger safety seat distribution and education program will address all three of these core areas while enabling us to offer a much needed service to the children and families of Harnett County.”
